Colorado has taken significant legislative steps to address the opioid crisis, including efforts to increase access to opioid rescue medications and reduce the devastating impact of fentanyl. The Fentanyl Accountability and Prevention Act (HB22-1326) exemplifies the state's commitment by funding education and treatment programs while enhancing penalties for distribution and possession. However, challenges persist, as seen with the failure of HB24-1306, which sought to strengthen penalties for fentanyl-related offenses. With fentanyl accounting for the majority of opioid overdose deaths and significant economic costs, Colorado's legislation highlights both progress and the ongoing need for robust harm reduction, advocacy, and education to save lives and support communities.
